Chapter Seven

They'd emerged from a dark hole in the rock after a nightmare journey down through the long, low tunnel, a tunnel that exited almost at the bottom of the track and led away from the fortress. Every stumbling step of the way he'd waited for the explosion that would entomb them in the mountain, yet it still hadn't come. Al-Rashid was elated and rambled about his 'moment of victory' as he glanced at the bewildered Marv Cohagen, blinking as they emerged into the bright morning sunlight.

"What's happening? I thought we were..."

"Welcome to your new life, my friend."

Marv looked around him. It had seemed impossible they could survive that kind of underground explosion, but al-Rashid had opened a concealed hatch at the opposite end of the prayer room. It was not unlike those used in submarines, and he beckoned him to go through. They ran bent over double down a long, low tunnel that seemed infinite.

The Arab was ecstatic as they progressed down the slope. "While those fools are fighting over the fortress, we are about to step into a new life, a new chapter in history. Up on that mountain, the charges are about to detonate. Everyone will die, and the Americans will learn there is a heavy price to pay when they come into my lands."

"I thought we were going to die," he said, his voice hoarse.

"Of course not. I am too valuable to the cause of the Islamic Caliphate to die a foolish death. You are important to me as well. Your knowledge will give us the power we need to conquer our enemies."

He means my own people. Americans.

Cohagen stopped, and al-Rashid cursed as he stumbled into him.

"Your men are still up there," the American pointed out, "They'll die, too, when those charges explode."

He sneered. "They are just men, and they are pledged to die for the cause of ISIS. Believe me, there are plenty more where those came from. When we are out in the open, I shall make a call on my satphone. Within ten minutes, a vehicle will collect us and take us to our destination."

"Mosul?"

"Mosul, yes, where the other part of our operation is already in progress. They have begun to successfully clone parts from the drones we brought down. When we have the guidance systems programmed, we shall be ready to start testing our new weapons on the first target. They will be your guidance systems, my friend. You will be a hero to our people, and your name will be remembered with honor."

Cohagen cringed away from the maniac. He knew the reality would very different. His name would be remembered, but not with any honor. There was a name they'd call him, and by which history would remember him. Traitor. His only compensation was he'd still be alive, this man had promised him.

Is it all worth it? I don't know, only that I know what they'll do to me if I refuse. I can't stand the pain of torture. I'm not a hero.
